Metal Gear Solid series is COMING TO THE IPHONE!

Ok, Ok…So that might be old news, but we have screenshots and information about the game.

Here are some new images of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid Touch for iPhone and iPod Touch, the story is based on MGS4, but the genre is strictly shooting. Producer Yasuyo Watanabe explained that because the iPod Touch and iPhone are not game consoles, the gameplay should be simplified. The game will have a simple touch shooting interface. You use finger to adjust the target and tab the screen to shoot.

it isn’t showing up for some people

RUMOR: iPod Touch with 7 to 9 inch screen in the works

TechCrunch has it that Apple Inc. may be working on a tablet-sized iPod Touch device, that’ll be very much similar to the iPod Touch, but with a 7 or 9 inch screen. How sweet would that be?!

I don’t know about you, but if I saw an iPod Touch with a 9 inch screen, I’d probably be all over it. Okay, so it wouldn’t be as portable, but who gives? Its screen would be 9 inches! Do you have any idea how amazing it would be to play two player games like Tap Tap Revolution on a tablet-sized iPod Touch? Woah.

The current iPod Touch models, first gen and second gen, are equipped with 3.5 inch screens, and are priced around the $229 - $399 mark. With that in mind, it’s pretty obvious that a larger sized iPod Touch would have a price tag much higher than the current gen iPod Touches. I’m not one to speculate on prices, but I’d expect something around the $699 mark for a 16GB model, if such models were to even exist. But who knows, right?

We could only hope that this rumor be true. If Apple Inc. does in fact make this dream a reality, they will of made a good choice on their own part.

3G unlock

The iPhone 3G unlock is here.  Thanks to the iPhone-Dev team, the 3G iPhone finally has a software unlock. Below is a basic guide.

* This is a beta so use at your own risk*

1. You must be on firmware 2.2 with modem firmware 2.28.00. So under Settings>General>About and scroll down and ensure you are running modem firmware 2.28.00. If you are NOT you must upgrade or restore to firmware 2.2.

2. Jailbreak your iPhone using QuickPwn

3. Install your new sim.

4. Now in Cydia or Installer, add the iPhone-Dev team source.

  • Cydia: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
  • Installer: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
  • Plase note that its a zero 0 not an o in yellowsn0w.

5. Install ‘yellowsn0w’ from Cydia or Installer.

6. Reboot your iPhone

7. Wait around 1 minute and then eject your sim card and then re-insert it.

8.  Now go into ‘Settings’ and turn ‘Airplane Mode’ ON

9. After 5 seconds turn it back OFF

10. Now just wait whit its ‘Searching…’ it should find your carrier in about 5-15 seconds.

Notes:

1. Soon you’ll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!)

2. If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)

3. No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.

4. The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

Check the iPhone-Dev team blogs for more updates.

Flash on the iPhone and iPod Touch…

…well not exactly.

The folks over at imobilecinema.com have released flash for the iPhone… well sorta.

They have created a plug-in for Safari on the iPhone that allows it to watch embedded flash videos on the iPhone.

Its plays most all embeded flv videos on most any site.

So far it works really well and works on most every site I’ve tried it on so far except Hulu.com

but it is one step forward toward flash on the iPhone and iPod touch

It is available on Cydia by install the the source: http://d.imobilecinema.com

3G unlock is HERE!, there’s one catch; You can’t Have it yet!

The 3G been the hardest nut to crack for the iPhone Dev Team.  Jailbreaking presented few problems, but that new baseband is what has given them the biggest headaches.

But that never deterred them, and their persistence has paid off, because the unlock is ready.  Dubbed “Yellowsn0w,” this is the software SIM unlock everyone has been waiting for.  Dev Team member MuscleNerd demonstrated on video the barebones application actively unlocking an AT&T-locked phone with a T-Mobile SIM in it, and even called it to prove that it works.  The unlock was fast, taking just a few moments, and seemed to go off without a hitch.

But speaking of hitches, there’s a bit of a catch: You can’t have it yet.  The Dev Team have scheduled a New Years Even 2008 launch date for Yellowsn0w as a festive way to ring in the new year.  Check out MuscleNerd’s video below, and those of you who have been waiting to get an iPhone because you’re with another GSM carrier, now would be a very good time to try and get your hands on one.

3G unlock clues…

We all know about the announcement the iPhone-Dev team made about unlocking the iPhone 3G. The codenamed yellowsn0w spoke of only working on iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier. This means the unlock would only work if you did not upgrade to firmware 2.2.

Today MuscleNerd from the iPhone-Dev team posted the following on his Twitter.

http://twitpic.com/u4jz - This is the 01.45.00 baseband, my favorite one :)

As you can see the screenshot shows him on firmware 2.2. The 01.45.00 baseband he speaks of is the baseband for firmware 2.0.0.

Zibri Giving Up?

Zibri the creator of Ziphone appears to be giving up.

It was an incredible ride, guys, and I’m sincerely grateful
to everybody who made this happen.
As some of you may know, from the 7th of November 2008 I’m a father.
All my efforts are now focused on my family then, later, I’ll start some other project
maybe related with the iPhone, maybe not.
So, from now the ziphone.org domain (Pagerank 6 on Google) is FOR SALE.
Here’s how the sale works:
Go to the donation page, donate $50 and write your buy offer in the
donation description free text field.
At the end of the sale the highest bid will get the domain.
Direct emails will not count as bids.
If by the end of the sale the maximum bid will not meet my minumum requirement,
all $50 donations will be refunded and the sale won’t happen.
Sale result and winning bidder will appear on this site.
The sale will end on 20th January 2009.
If the winner won’t pay the bid by the 10th of February 2009,
the 2nd higher bidder will be the winner.
Namaste,Zibri

yellowsn0w?

Now that you guys have got used to the sunburn and blindness caused by the glare of our new blog template, we can get back to normal business. We’ll give you some updates and also tell you our schedule for the festive season.

Over the Christmas break some of our members will be talking at the Chaos Computer Club’s 25C3 Congress. This talk will be a juicy technical talk relating to iPhone platform and our previous exploits. You can see more information about the talk “Hacking the iPhone”. There is even a super-cool TeamPwnapple T-Shirt ;-)

3G Unlock

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
* You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone. It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
* Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at. We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
* We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post)

DFU Issues in OS X 10.5.6

Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.

We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

iPod touch 2G

Currently we are not investigating the iPod touch 2G. Other people outside the Dev-Team are looking into this, but we are not at the moment. Please don’t hassle us with comments and requests about this, they’ll just be deleted and ignored. If we do look at this device it will be sometime in the New Year and we’ll inform you guys if and when we commence this work.

We would like to reiterate that this is not because -

1. We are mean
2. We are turning our back on the iPod touch community
3. We have been paid off by JFK, Princess Diana or Elvis

This is because -

1. It’s not an iPhone
2. We have been busy with the 3G unlock.
3. We have been busy with the CCC talk.
4. Only one of us has a iPod touch 2G (but we’ll see what Santa brings)
5. Our employers don’t get as excited as us about hacking expensive pretty devices
6. Unfortunately our partners, parents and pets need occasional attention too.

Update: Live Demo

Sometime before Christmas, MuscleNerd will show a live demo of the unlock (and some other random nucleus and pwnage stuff). It’ll be streamed live via the awesome Qik application, and announced via his Twitter account just as the broadcast begins. -iPhone-Dev team

iPhone Dev-Team Unlock Update: “Target date is a few days after Christmas :)”

From The iPhone Blog:
For anyone who has been waiting for a software unlock soltution for their iPhone 3G, it looks like you patience will be paying off in a short few weeks. As Dev Team member MuscleNerd stated “Target date is a few days after Christmas”.
With this good news comes some bad news… in order to be one of the first to be able to unlock your iPhone 3G it will be required that you are running the 01.45.00 baseband. Which would mean you are on 2.0 firmware. Now who is actually running the 2.0 firmware at this moment in time is beyond me but we have to take what comes our way. There is a possibility that a unlock will come for the 02.11.07 baseband (2.1 firmware) as well but that is not for certain. And if you are running the 2.2 firmware currently you must have followed our guide to jailbreak 2.2 firmware on a Mac while preserving the baseband. The Dev-Team did warn you and we relayed the warning numerous times.
Here is what the Dev-Team had to say recently:
Right now for 02.11.07 we have some untested ideas. Ideally we’d have something solid by the end of next week, but if we don’t then it would be a staged release, with 01.45.00 first out of the gate.

Here is a list of the iPhone firmware versions and their matching basebands…

- 2.0.0 Firmware & 01.45.00 Baseband

- 2.0.1 Firmware & 01.48.02 Baseband

- 2.0.2 Firmware & 02.08.01 Baseband

- 2.1.0 Firmware & 02.11.07 Baseband

- 2.2.0 Firmware & 02.28.00 Baseband

Those of you lucky enough to still be on 2.0.0 or the 01.45.00 baseband will be able to unlock first. If you are at 2.1 or used PwnageTool to update to 2.2 then you will have the 2.11.07 baseband. This will be the second baseband to receive an unlock. Those on the 02.28.00 baseband will likely have to wait a while before an unlock is released so make sure you use a tutorial on our site to jailbreak and update rather then using iTunes directly.
If this has totally confused you, accept our apologies. An iPhone 3G software unlock should be here before New Years for the first baseband of the device. Other unlocks for later basebands should come shortly after. Keep hanging in there, the Dev-Team will take care of you!

iPhone Copy and Paste Now Working Between Safari and Mail

Finally, someone has conceived a way to copy and paste text from Safari to Mail, and between web pages. And this time, it doesn’t require any software installation and it’s legal:

Unlike other approaches, it works with the two apps that matter most, Mail and Safari, and gets around Apple’s onerous App Store terms through a clever combination of javascript bookmarks and web services.

In fact, it doesn’t require anything to be installed, so it avoids the App Store altogether. As you can see in the video, Pastebud—as the service is called—works using two bookmarks in Safari. One prepares and loads the page you are viewing, ready to select text at the touch of a finger. From there, you can copy any text you want and create a new mail message with that text in it. In addition to that, you will be able to copy and paste in the text field of a different web page.

While this is not full copy and paste capabilities, I, for one, welcome the ability do exactly this, which is basically what I want to do 95% of the time. According to Jed Schmidt, creator of Pastebud, they have been testing it for about a week and they are now “putting the finishing touches on the web site before launch”.

http://pastebud.com will bring us copy and paste tomorrow

iPhone 3G Now Available for in-Home Activation

AT&T is now selling the Apple iPhone 3G through their online store.

Currently the offer includes free overnight shipping. The phones are offered in 8GB black $199.99, 16GB black or white $299.99 for new customers and require a two year agreement. Only one handset per household can be purchased online, and we suspect this is another effort to prevent a gray market from developing. If you want additional iPhone 3Gs or if you are an upgrader, you have to visit an Apple or AT&T store.

Interestingly, activation can be done at home–something both Apple and AT&T did not allow anyone to do when the iPhone 3G was released.

Apple is still allowing you to purchase via an Apple gift card and by starting your purchase at Apple’s online store, but both of these methods require users to visit the nearest Apple store. AT&T’s offering allows people without easy access to either an AT&T or Apple Store to order and activate iPhones.

iTunes going DRM-free soon?

It is being rumored that the oh-so-popular music downloading software iTunes will be heading in a good direction this afternoon; DRM-Free mp3’s!

This has been brought to Apple Insider’s attention via French technology site ElectronLibre, stating that Apple will start publishing music on the iTunes Store, DRM-free, from Sony, Universal, and Warner on December 9th, which frankly, is today.

Along this note, iTunes buyers have actually noticed that songs have been briefly selling unprotected, that weren’t either from EMI or independents.

Do keep in mind that this is simply a rumor, and there are no true facts as of this morning. We’ll be sure to let you know if anything else on this front is heard or seen.

Update: Okay, quick update here. CNet News states that the changes of music going DRM-Free today are bogus. Untrue. False. Negative. However, the news site also states that it is in fact true that Apple is in negotiation with the three record labels, and is in fact trying to get the music to be sold DRM-free. The only problem is, it’s not going so well right now, or, the companies are just failing to respond as of yet.

So, with that said, it is very likely that we will have DRM-free music within the first quarter of 2009, but don’t hold your breath on it.
